Hello Monte,

I'd actually quickly seen the light and exchanged a Sony 8-track player/recorder for the cassette.

Thank you for the bump on TDIH. I'd have been dangerous had I had some money, more time and known what I was doing at the time.

I had a 8-track player/recorder also, about the same time as you, probably the same model as yours - there were very few models (maybe just the one we owned). I unloaded mine the same way you did, shortly after I bought my new portable cassette recorder to tape the GD.

re: "I'd have been dangerous if..."

Oh shit, Gerry, this one is easy for me. And this is my first time saying this: "I'd have been dangerous if I grew up in the Haight-Ashbury area as a real-hippie, instead of growing up in the NJ / NYC area as a hipster-hippie." Rebellious punk-kids like me didn't know shit! Going full-blown counterculture is something I'd recommend to everyone! These opportunities were far more unlimited back then than they are today. GD and the pranksters were on the west coast; Timothy Leary was on the east coast. Not to mention, we had a thriving and full-blown middle-class-based economy.

Growing up 50 miles south of SF in a single-parent household with a younger sister and brother, living paycheck to paycheck and with the draft hanging over my head, kept me pretty much in line and sufficiently isolated.

Tear gas and police actions on campus weren't much fun, and those who broke ranks to break windows while marching down San Carlos Street to protest Nixon made me uneasy. Working summers 10-12 hour shifts six nights a week at the local canneries and living at home got me through college, which ended my student deferment, and then I passed the pre-induction physical up in Oakland. The lottery stopped at 125 and I was holding number 127.

Motivation and opportunity come in many different forms.

For me and my age group, it was the second year of this new "draft-lottery." My d.o.b. was pulled at number 150-ish. They were drafting up to 120-ish that year.

my story growing up, and all

Sounds familiar. The local draft board dropped my college deferment because my number would never come up. Well it got close enough that I had to go to Roanoke to be examined. I passed, came home and packed a bag for Canada. They got within 3 of my number before the end lf the year and I didn't make the trip north.

Turned 18 summer 71'.Registered and got my draft card. Had lottery later that year pulled #323. Monte and I were both at Roosevelt Stadium Summer 73' and he has caught 7/31/and 8/1 beautifully on tape. We didn't know each other but still kind of cool we were at some of the same shows. Thanks to both of you guys for the hard work you put in to give us that sound.
